What factors affect how much your motorhome is worth?
Understanding these factors can help you get the best possible price for your motorhome.
Make and model
Certain makes and models are more desirable and retain their value better than others. Interestingly, with motorhomes, that isn't always based on the initial cost of the motorhome. Some motorhomes remain in better condition, certain models can become more popular over time and there can be a rarity value to certain layouts or features that are no longer in production.
Your motorhome's condition
The condition of your motorhome will of course affect value. Whilst it rarely pays to carry out expensive repair work before trying to sell, improving general appearance at a low cost can certainly help. This includes cleaning, minor scratches and chips, carpets and so on. Rather like buying a house, if the immediate impression is good, it goes a long way.
Mileage
With motorhomes, mileage tends not be an issue in the same way it is for a car, because they are based on commercial vehicles that are designed for high mileage, which very few motorhomes do. But with motorhomes, mileage is more of an indicator of wear and tear on the habitation area. So obviously, the lower the mileage, typically the higher the value.
Service history
Because motorhomes are based on commercial chassis with relatively low service intervals it is tempting to think a service history is not so important. This is not the case. There are critical elements in the engine such as cam belts that need to be seen to have been serviced and changed. And of course, crucially, a history of warranty services and habitation checks for the back end, can significantly maintain value.
Optional extras and accessories
Because of the wide range and high value of extras and accessories on motorhomes, this can significantly impact motorhome valuations. Before you get your motorhome valuation, try and put together a full list of options and accessories so that your motorhome valuation matches all that your motorhome has to offer.
Current motorhome market prices
The current market can affect motorhome valuations in two ways. Although in the very long term, values have only ever gone up, the market can be subject to external factors. The obvious example of this was during the covid pandemic when scarcity caused motorhome values to soar, before settling back to more normal levels. Also, motorhome values can be affected by season patterns – they tend to be most in demand during spring and summer, while motorhome values can be softer during the winter months.
